José L. Piedra stands apart among Habanos: its filler is grown only in the Remedios region of central Cuba, and every size is totally handmade with short filler. The Piedra family came to Cuba from Asturias in the 1880s and settled near Santa Clara, at the heart of Remedios, where tobacco has been grown since the sixteenth century. The brand was founded by the second generation, led by José Lamadrid Piedra.
